Regenerative Therapy Treatments

Are you considering elective surgery for a musculoskeletal injury or chronic pain? Our NJ Spine and Wellness facility offers platelet and stem cell procedures as a non-invasive alternative to surgery.

This new regenerative therapy technology allows patients to avoid surgery and use their own body’s blood to encourage healing.

What is PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma?

To begin PRP therapy, a small sample of your own blood is taken (the size similar to a lab test). The blood is then placed in a centrifuge and spun at high speeds. This process separates the platelets and growth factors from other components. The concentrated platelet, rich plasma (PRP) is injected into and around the injury site using ultrasound guidance.

When injected at the site of the injury in the body, platelets release healing proteins called growth factors and attract cells that contribute to regrowth – also known as stem cells. This action jump starts and significantly strengthens the body’s natural healing signal.

What does the procedure entail?

PRP is done in the office with local anesthesia. The blood is drawn the same day of treatment – it takes about 20-25 minutes for each visit.

Once the platelet portion of the blood is separated the concentrated injection is performed under ultrasound guidance into and around the problem area.

Typically, patients will experience about 2-5 days of soreness after the treatment. It is also common to feel achy or a stiff sensation of fullness at the injection site. The fullness sensation is due to the platelet gel forming a matrix that takes up space within tissue.

Unlike a steroid injection, most of our patients see results and the most benefits about 4-6 weeks post injection. It is important to follow up with our office to track your progress. Depending on symptoms, multiple treatments may be required.

Initial Regenerative Therapy Visit

Initially you will be seen for a consultation with one of our physicians in order to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

The initial regenerative therapy visit includes reviewing your medical, athletic and occupational history related to your injury. The injured area will also be examined and possibly imaged with diagnostic ultrasound.

We suggest that you bring any prior scans (ultrasound, x-ray, MRI,CT) and reports relating to your condition that you may have had in the past. During your consultation we will also review these while assessing your condition.

After an initial consultation, if we feel that you would benefit from regenerative therapies we will schedule a follow up for you to come back for PRP treatment.

Post PRP Injection Guidelines

If you feel symptoms of swelling, fevers, chills, weakness, numbness, tingling or prolonged redness contact our office immediately.

Week of PRP – Treated areas should remain immobile. Resume normal daily activities, DO NOT exercise the treated extremity. The first few days may also require bracing depending on the treated area.

Week Two – Maintain light exercises, controlled and moderate movement is important for the proper stimulation of tissue to rebuild strength. We strongly advise that you avoid heavy lifting or high intensity exercises because it may compromise progress.

Week Three – By week three you should be cleared by one of our practitioners to resume exercising the area. You should gradually increase the intensity of impact to ensure that you do not re-injure the tissue. Ease off intensity if the pain persists – use pain as your guide and ease off if it intensifies.

Week Four – Progressively build back to normal exercise and activity by week four.
