BETTER
PHYSICAL THERAPY

Physical Therapy Treatment at NJ Spine and Wellness

With three locations in Old Bridge, Freehold and Matawan, NJ Spine and Wellness is your trusted source for physical therapy in New Jersey. While chiropractic care works to realign your spinal column, our physical therapy team is focused on restoring strength to the surrounding tissues and improving diminished range of movement. Our goal is to maximize your pain relief by providing the latest techniques and most comprehensive care services.

Physical therapy is an effective treatment for several conditions, including:

Our therapeutic treatment team includes several physical therapists who hold a doctorate in this area of medicine. Therefore, they develop personalized treatments based on their expertise in orthopedics and kinesiology, or how the body works and moves. The core of our physical therapy sessions consists of directed exercises that gradually increase in difficulty. These are designed to help you safely rebuild your muscles and inner core strength, while slowly regaining your flexibility.

Do I Need Physical Therapy?

If you are suffering from any of the conditions listed below, physical therapy treatment might be an option for you. Additionally, if you do not have any of these conditions, but are experiencing any type of joint or muscle pain, we encourage you to reach out to us for a consultation.

You may also need to see a physical therapist if you have been in a car accident and notice persistent pain or a lack of mobility, even if an accident occurred at a previous time. Some injuries, like whiplash, may not cause immediate symptoms, but you may notice them over a period of hours, days or even weeks after an accident. If you do not seek immediate treatment, then consider treatment when you experience chronic and persistent symptoms that interfere with your lifestyle.

  • Cardiopulmonary conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis and post-myocardial infarction
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger
  • Musculoskeletal dysfunction such as back pain, rotator cuff tears, and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ)
  • Neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, vestibular dysfunction, and traumatic brain injuries
  • Pediatric conditions such as developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy
  • Sports-related injuries, such as concussion and tennis elbow
  • Women’s health and pelvic floor dysfunction, such as urinary incontinence and lymphedema

The NJ Spine and Wellness Multidisciplinary Approach

Our physical therapists and Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) work together to help achieve pain relief for you. Chiropractic care, massage therapy and physical therapy are complementary treatments that help you heal from within and prevent future injuries. In addition to the therapeutic exercise programs we design for you, our physical therapists may also incorporate other techniques into your treatment plan.

Other techniques offered by our physical therapists include:

  • The Graston Technique® incorporates the use of special instruments to mobilize and restore damaged tissues while minimizing the build-up of scar tissue.
  • Kinesio Injury Taping – provides support and stability to your joints and muscles without restricting your range of motion.
  • McConnell Taping – helps support joint tracking while playing a crucial role in alleviating shoulder and knee pain.
  • Active Release Technique® (ART) – a movement-based soft tissue system that treats problems with tendons, muscles and ligaments.

Benefits of Physical Therapy

Here are some of the key benefits of leveraging physical therapy treatment to manage your pain.

  • Reduced need for prescription drugs including opioids to relieve pain
  • Can be used as an alternative treatment to surgery
  • Improved mobility and movement
  • Recovery from injury or trauma
  • Recovery from stroke or paralysis
  • Fall prevention
  • Improved balance
  • Management of age-related medical problems

Should I Follow a Physical Therapy Schedule?

Instituting a physical therapy schedule will help you in several ways. First and most importantly, physical therapy is at its most effective when it’s performed regularly — you need consistency and repetition to reap any sustained benefit from these exercises.

Physical therapy exercises often build on previous sessions. If you skip a session, you’ll likely experience a delay in your recovery. With an established schedule, you will continue progressing throughout your program and increasing your capabilities as you work on more difficult movements.

Another reason to follow a physical therapy schedule is to ensure that it’s working. A balanced progression will allow you to see the benefits over time, which will reassure you that you should continue. Finding a therapist you like and connect with will also be easier when you follow a schedule, since therapists often work certain days.

Finally, a schedule can help you plan when to do at-home exercises if they’re needed to supplement your recovery. Often, therapists will show you how to do something and ask you to do it on your own time as well. The schedule will help you determine when you should do those exercises. The better you anticipate such commitments, the easier it will be to build them into your day.

Why You Should Try Physical Therapy Treatment

Physical therapy is an effective way to relieve pain and regain mobility. This tool will allow you to focus on a specific problem area and perform well-designed movements that will enhance strength and foster flexibility. When done correctly, physical therapy provides benefits over both the short and long term.

One reason many people feel drawn to physical therapy is that it is nonsurgical. While surgery can be an effective treatment for chronic back pain, you should exhaust your other options before pursuing it. Physical therapy will give you a chance to resolve your problem in a noninvasive manner, if possible. If you do need surgery, physical therapy performed beforehand will strengthen your body and better position you for a quick, complete recovery.

Another reason to try physical therapy is that it’s proven to work. Many of our patients see a significant reduction in pain. They feel motivated to continue with treatment because they can feel how effective it is. Physical therapy can also be preventative, which means it protects against future pain by strengthening different parts of the body. When your body is well-balanced, you’re less likely to compensate for a painful spot and hurt something else.

Physical therapy addresses the cause of a problem, not just the problem itself. Lower back pain, for instance, is an indication of a greater issue with your body. Pain does not happen without reason. When you seek physical therapy, you may be able to find why you are experiencing your pain. Then, you can work on ways to eliminate the issue so that you become pain-free in the long term. In other words, by trying physical therapy treatment, you can increase your quality of life.
