Symptoms of Joint Pain & Osteoarthritis

Pain and Tenderness
The pain in early arthritis can usually be classified in two different categories, pain and tenderness. You might feel a sharp pain when you begin to move the affected joint in a certain way. For example, if you begin to feel discomfort from regular routine activities like opening a jar with hands or fingers that may be affected with arthritis.

Joint Stiffness
Along with joint pain comes stiffness. Joint stiffness is normal when you first wake up or have been sitting at your desk all day. It’s also a sign of early osteoarthritis. Individuals that suffer from early OA often feel better when they wake up and warm up their joints, start their day with some non-instensive exercises.

Abnormal Sensations
Cartilage is meant to be a shock absorber that helps your joints move smooth. When cartilage wears down, the bone-to-bone rubbing can produce a number of abnormal sensations. Grinding of the joints is common in OA patients, and is the manifestation of the bones rubbing together.

Loss of Flexibility
People in the early stages of arthritis may notice that moving the affected areas of their bodies is not as easy as it once was. Stiffness and pain can contribute to loss of flexibility and loss of range of motion.

Timing & Stages
Pain, tenderness, joint stiffness tend to be limited to very specific times in the early stages of osteoarthritis. You may notice your hips hurt after a game of basketball.
