From sudden unexpected events like sports injuries to accidents, to aging and degeneration, hand pain may occur for many different reasons. Prior to any treatment, your doctor will examine your hand to determine the cause of the pain.
What is Causing Your Hand and Wrist Pain?
Below are common causes of pain in the hand and wrist:
If you break a bone, you will feel a lot of pain in your hand. You may also experience swelling, stiffness and restricted movement. If you have a fractured finger or if you have broken a bone at your wrist joint and are not able to move your hand or wrist normally, then you need to get urgent medical care.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This is a common nerve disorder in the hand that may make you feel pain in the forearm, wrist, palm and fingers. It can also cause numbness, weakness or a tingling sensation. You may also experience difficulty grasping and holding objects.
De Quervain’s Tendinitis
This causes pain at the part of the wrist that is linked to your thumb. The pain can make it difficult for you to clench or turn your wrist or grasp objects. It is usually caused by inflammation or irritation of the wrist tendons located at the base of your thumb.
Arthritis can cause the cartilage in your joints to wear out. As a result, the bones produce a painful feeling when they move against each other causing swelling to occur at the joint. Progressive wearing-out of cartilage can occur due to aging, a fracture or a dislocation.
Treating Hand and Wrist Pain
The first step in diagnosing and treating is a physical examination. Your doctor will check your wrist for swelling, tenderness or deformity. You will then be asked to perform certain movements so the doctor can determine your range of motion before assessing your forearm and grip strength.
If necessary, your doctor will order imaging tests such as:
- Computer tomography
After diagnosis, your doctor will recommend the most effective personalized treatment plan.
